Cleaning concrete and clay roof tiles with high pressure is OK, and in fact the most effective cleaning solution for roofs in Southern California. Here in SoCal we have our own unique strain of Gleocapsa magma. The moderate humidity levels promote its growth, but also cause it to embed deep into the tile pores. As a result, the ONLY way to completely remove it is with high pressure, which is why this is required to get an insurance renewal. Simple Soft-Washing with chemicals will not work!
Cleaning asphalt shingles or coated metal roofs with high pressure is NOT OK. This will cause permanent damage and degrade the surface of the roof, eliminating its protective qualities. Fortunately, the algae doesn't embed nearly as deep on these roof surfaces, and soft washing techniques ARE sufficient for cleaning, including insurance renewals.
